  • Full reopening of school - Monday 8th March 2021

    Fri 26 Feb 2021

Return to School – Spring Term 2021 – Monday 8th March

Please read the following information carefully and keep it safe for reference.

The Rationale of welcoming all children back to school in March

    Prevention:

    • Minimise contact – adult to adult, adult to child, child to child
    • Ensure face coverings are used in recommended circumstances
    • Ensure everyone washes hands regularly
    • Ensure good respiratory hygiene (catch it, bin it, kill it)
    • Maintain enhanced cleaning
    • Minimise contact across the site and maintain social distancing wherever possible
    • Keep occupied spaces well ventilated

    Response to any Infection:

    1. Engage with NHS Test & Trace process

    2. Manage confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst the school community

    3. Contain any outbreak by following local health protection team advice.

    Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to welcoming all of the children back to school on Monday 8th March.  The arrangements remain predominately the same as they did in September, with a few additions according to guidance.

    Practical Arrangements

    Start of the day

We will be welcoming back all children from Years R to 6 on Monday 8th March. All the children will need to be in school for registration by 8.50 a.m., in order to start lessons at 9 a.m.

We do not intend to stagger the start times since this can cause problems when there are siblings in different classes. However, we will ask the children to enter the building in the following places:

Squirrels – up the main drive and through Squirrels side gate

Otters – through side gate and into their classroom via the Otters outside area.

Foxes – through the side gate and into their classroom via the ‘normal’ entrance.

Badgers – up the main drive and through the fire doors.

The children will need to wash their hands before coming into school.  We would ask that parents and children social distance as they wash hands and enter the building. Please can we ask that only one person drops off per family and that you do not linger and talk in the carparks.

We ask that the adult dropping off wears a mask.

We cannot admit adults to the site at the present time without a prior appointment. If you need to speak to a member of staff, please phone or email the office and we will arrange a suitable time.

    Lunchtime

The full menu will be on offer form the kitchen (the options will change after Easter) we start on week 1 or the children are welcome to bring packed lunch from home.  The fruit scheme will continue for children in Year 1 and Year 2. Children in Foxes and Badgers should bring in their own healthy snack. The tuck shop will not be open.

    Equipment

Your children will need the correct school uniform, a water bottle, to wear P.E kit on the day it is time tabled and a coat appropriate for the weather.

They will not need any bags, stationary or items from home. Lockers will not be in use until further notice.

P.E days – children will need to wear their P.E kit to school

    Badgers – Monday and Wednesday

    Foxes – Tuesday and Wednesday

    Otters – Monday and Wednesday

    Squirrels – Monday and Thursday

    Before and After School Club

These will run from Monday 8th March for parents who need this order to work.

Mrs Martin will be running our Early Birds and Mrs Daniel will be running our After School Club (Late Birds).

Due to COVID the club will need to run in the following way:

    1. The clubs will run in the hall and the children will need to stay in their class bubbles, separate from each other.  In the case of siblings, they should stay in their bubble rather than with their family member. You may need to talk to your child about this.
    2. We will not provide food after school, however children may bring a packed tea or snack to eat.  We will continue to encourage them to drink from their water bottle, that they have brought in to school.
    3. Places for Early and Late Birds will need to be booked a week in advance.  We would request that all bookings are made by the Thursday of the week prior to attending;
    4. Please be aware that if you book a place at either club and do not attend you will still be charged.  This is a change to previous protocol when we were able to be more flexible.  Please remember that we need to pay staff and cannot afford to run at a loss.
    5. The children will be able to access most of the resources that we have used previously although there may be some adaptations.

Thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

    End of the day

Children in Squirrels will leave at 3.15pm through the carpark

Children in Otters class will leave at 3.15pm through the side gate.

Children in Foxes class will leave at 3.30pm through the side gate.

Children in Badgers class will leave at 3.30pm through the fire door on the main drive.

In order to help parents, organise pickup children in Foxes and Badgers with younger siblings in Otters and Squirrels will be able to leave at 3.15pm through their normal exit.

Please can we ask that only one person collects per family and that you do not linger and talk in the carparks.

    Communication to School

Please direct all communications through the school office and not directly to the teacher’s emails. We will ensure that all messages are delivered as they were pre lockdown. Thank you for your co-operation with this.

    Important Considerations

We know that children will have different reactions regarding the return to school and that this may be a time of further uncertainty for them.  If you have any concerns at all and would like to ask advise, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will make sure that we support you effectively.  Please be assured that the welfare of your child(ren) is at the forefront of everything that we do here and we will make sure that this transition is a positive experience.

All the staff who work in school test twice a week using the COVID-19 self-test kit.  Please do not send your children to school if they or anyone in the family/support bubbles is unwell.  We would ask that you remain cautious, and establish the nature of the illness before sending them to school and risking the health and wellbeing wider school community.

Here at Broughton we are really proud of the way that our whole school community works together sensibly and sensitively to support each other.  I have absolutely no doubt that this re-opening to all families will be a happy and joyful time and that as usual, Broughton Primary School will be filled with happy smiling faces from both staff and pupils.

    Kind regards

    Lucy Macey – Headteacher.

  • A message from Mrs Macey

    Fri 15 Jan 2021

    Dear Parents,

A huge thank you to everyone who has been working so hard this week to facilitate the remote learning. We have had some fantastic feedback from both parents and children about what is working well. I appreciate that we are still getting used to working in this way but I have been impressed by the maturity that the children have shown and also their resilience when facing the challenges. Please do let us know if you have any particular concerns or issues and we will endeavour to support you in the best way.

The teachers and learning support assistants have adapted brilliantly to this new way of working, and I am incredibly proud of them too. They have been planning for , delivering to, and supporting all the children in their classes, whilst retaining their sunny smiles and positive outlooks. I won't say anymore or their heads will get too big!

We are continually seeking to refine and improve our offer, and will be adding to the provision, as we are able. Badgers and Foxes have additional live lessons in French and some 1:1 teaching with Mrs Bottle. Please make sure that your children attend these, since Mrs Bottle has planned each session and is on line waiting for you!

The virtual challenge- Race across Europe is now underway. You can walk, run, skate, scoot, cycle , swim or horse ride your distances. Please read the e-mail to see how to get involved.

We have been notified that as of 25th January all teachers will be tested for COVID on a weekly basis- can't wait for that!! We will keep you up to date with how this goes, and who is the biggest baby about it all!

We miss you all and I look forward to catching the next glimpse of the children on the screen.

    Have a lovely weekend

    Lucy Macey

  • Reading Letter

    Thu 14 Jan 2021

    Dear Parents/Carers,

As we are passionate about maintaining the progress that your children are making with their reading and encouraging reading for pleasure, we thought it would be helpful to point you in the direction of some reading activities and resources that will prove useful during remote learning.

With children at home looking for new kinds of entertainment, lockdown seems like the perfect opportunity to get more children reading for pleasure. In school, we encourage the children to read wide range of both fiction and non-fiction and in a variety of ways e.g. books, magazines and newspapers and we would love you to do the same at home. The ideas below will hopefully provide you some guidance and support to help support your children’s reading whilst also making it a fun experience for all of you involved!

    • Use the ‘Oxford Owl’ reading site which is a free eBook library for 3 to 11-year-old and a hub of educational games and activities. This will allow children access to the reading schemes that they read at school and can be filtered by age group, text type, book band, phonics phase or reading level.
    • Listen to an Audiobook – Audible is available to all children for as long as schools are closed. Children everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories. All stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet. ‘Elevenses’ with David Walliams is also a personal favourite: https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/
    • BorrowBox is a great app that allows you to access books from your library during this lockdown. To sign up, follow the link below: https://www.borrowbox.com/
    • The Winter Reading Library Challenge has been launched! This year, the Public Libraries’ Winter Reading Challenge is all about getting cosy together to share the love of reading. It kicked off on Monday 11th January and runs for six weeks, until the end of the spring half-term - by Saturday 27th February. The children need to read or listen to any four books to complete the challenge. This includes books they read or listen to for school, with family members and friends over Zoom, bedtime stories, non-fiction books, eBooks and audiobooks. Those who take part online will automatically be sent a certificate when they complete the challenge, but the most important thing is that your child enjoys some winter reading for pleasure. To take part, you will need to sign up using the link below: https://www.hants.gov.uk/librariesandarchives/kids-zone
    • First News (an online newspaper for children) are offering free access to their weekly paper for a limited period of time. To access the latest issue, you just need to simply enter your email address using the link below: https://subscribe.firstnews.co.uk/free-downloadable-issue/
    • Make the most of books especially written for this time - there's no doubt that we find ourselves in the most unusual of times and in response, a small number of specially produced books have been created during this time for free reading online. The Book of Hopes in particular is a collection of short stories, poems and essays from famous children’s writers and illustrations. You can read it for free by clicking on the link below: https://literacytrust.org.uk/family-zone/9-12/book-hopes/

We hope that these resources prove useful during this time. Happy reading!

  • Lockdown - January 2021

    Mon 04 Jan 2021

    Dear Parents,

We are very sorry that we will not be welcoming all the children back on Wednesday as we had originally intended. In line with the National Lock Down we will be closed. I wanted to reassure you that on Wednesday virtual learning will be ready to take off and the teachers will be using Google Classroom as the platform. We will be in touch tomorrow with details and timings of how this will work and I know that both teachers and children will make the best of this situation.

We will send out an e-mail to parents of children who may still attend school and we would be grateful if you could confirm if your child will be attending.

The school will be open for children whose parents are keyworkers- please be aware that due to the severity of the situation at the moment we would advise that both care-givers need to be keyworkers (critical to the Covid response) and that if children can be cared for and access remote learning at home, this is the preferred option. Please e-mail school if you require a place for your child/ren.

If you have any questions about this e-mail, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    With kind regards

  • BROUGHTON BECOMES A SILVER ‘RIGHTS RESPECTING’ SCHOOL

    Thu 10 Dec 2020

    November 2020

A most significant event in the last month has been the award to the school of the Silver level of Rights Respecting Accreditation. The UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of schools in the UK. To quote from the UNICEF website:

“UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens. Using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as our guide, we are working with more UK schools than almost any other organisation. Over 1.6 million children in the UK go to a Rights Respecting School and nearly 5,000 schools up and down the country are working through the Award.”

In the Silver level evaluation, the moderator looked at all the examples of work that we have done, sampled lessons, examined portfolios, and looked at our school improvement plans. She also spoke at length to Mrs Bottle and a number of children from the steering group. She was full of praise for the amount and quality of the work that has gone in to our Rights Respecting journey to Silver but above all else commended the knowledge and passion demonstrated by the children who spoke to her. Everyone in the school has contributed to this achievement, but particular thanks go to the following children, who spoke so eloquently and whose commitment to this work inspires us all. Well done James, Flossie, Jemima, and Annabel. And, of course, to Mrs Bottle, who has worked very hard to embed this ethos across the school and lead our work in this area. We now begin our journey towards the Gold accreditation!
