  • Reading Letter

Fri 17 Sep 2021 Miss Ayers

    Dear Parents/Carers,

Reading is a passport to the world and the benefits of reading open children up to ideas, experiences, places and times they might never otherwise experience in real life. Every child deserves the chance to become a reader and research shows that children who enjoy reading achieve well right across the curriculum.

With this in mind, a few events have been organised this half term to kick off the academic year with reading at the forefront of our learning and we hope you will support us in promoting the joy of reading:

    • Broughton Reading Breakfast – Every Friday morning, beginning the 24th September, children are invited into school early with their parent to share a book together and have breakfast. From 8:15am every week, you can enter the school through the side gate and come into the hall via the playground where there will be refreshments on offer and a chance to experience the joy of reading together. If your parent cannot attend, you are still more than welcome to come along.
    • Book Club – Our Literacy Ambassador, Annabel Henville, will be planning and delivering weekly book clubs with groups of children. This half term, Annabel will be working with Year 3 children on Mondays where they will read ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ by Tom McLaughlin and on Fridays, a group of Year 6 children will be reading Ross Welford’s ‘When We Got Lost in Dreamland’ together. These groups will be changed every half term to provide as many children as possible the opportunity to collectively share a story.
    • Lunchtime Book Club – Miss Ayers invites any avid readers to join her in Badgers’ classroom from 12:30-1:00pm on a Wednesday lunchtime, starting Wednesday 22nd September, where children can come along and get lost in stories. As well as reading, we will discuss the books we read and write reviews for them so that we can recommend them to others.
    • Book Swap – On Friday 8th October, children are invited to bring in any of their old books to exchange for exciting new reads. This is a simple and sustainable way for the children to exchange books that they have already read and in return, receive brand-new reading material at no cost.
    • Reading is Magic Festival – Running from 27th September – 1st October 2021, this five-day festival has a great line up of writers, illustrators and poets. We, at school, will be taking part in some of their online workshops but check out the Children’s Literature Festival website for details of other upcoming events: https://bathfestivals.org.uk/childrens-literature/whats-on/

We hope that one or more of the events above takes your child’s interest. Developing a love of reading is a priority for us at Broughton Primary School and installing this passion is our aim from when children first join us in Squirrels, all the way through to their last moments with us in Badgers.

    Happy reading!
