Summer Term 2

2023-2024

History

This half term, our history learning is focussed on World War 2. Throughout the unit, we will compare the roles of men and woman during the second world war and learn about the Holocaust, describing how and why Jews were subject to Nazi prejudice and discrimination during the war. Finally, we will be looking at the use of propaganda throughout World War 2 and create our own propaganda posters.

DT

During our 'Electrical systems' unit, we will be identifying simple circuit components and be able to give a basic explanation of their function. We will also remove and replace different parts of a Doodler, as part of a team. We will then create a functional Doodler that creates scribbles on paper with or without a switch.

PSHE

Our PSHE learning this term centres around 'Growing and Changing'. We began our learning defining what is meant by stereotypes and recognised how the media can sometimes reinforce these. We will now move onto identifying people who can support someone who is dealing with a challenging time of change and define the word 'puberty', considering some of the physical and emotional changes associated with it.

Maths

We began the half term focussing on geometry as we drew given angles and measured them in degrees. We also compared and classified geometric shapes. Going forwards, we will be focussing on percentages, recognising the percent symbol (%) and solving problems involving percentages of quantities as well as writing percentages as a fraction with 100 as the denominator.  Later on in the half term, we will be using all four operations in the context of measure and decimals as we use, read, write and convert between all metric units. We will also using equivalences between metric units and common imperial units.

English

Our two writing journeys this half term will use the text drivers 'Night Mail' and 'The Man Who Walked Between the Towers'.

In the first writing journey, we will be learning poetic terms and where/when to use them appropriately. We will also perform poetry as we listen to Public Service Broadcasting’s version of Night Mail. We will then identify differences in content with poems of a similar structure and plan our own poems, building on an existing structure. Our poetry will then be performed with an awareness of the audience.

Our second writing journey's main outcome, 'The Man Who Walked Between the Towers', will be a biography focussing on why Petit’s life story is so important for us to learn about. We will also write letters of advice and use expanded noun phrases when describing a diary entry.

Guided Reading

Throughout the half term, we will be reading our class book, 'The Midnight Guardians' by Ross Montgomery', as we explore other texts to develop our reading skills.

RE

Our RE unit this half term is Arti Ceremony, with a focus on ritual. We will be preparing a description/definition of the word ritual before thinking about how these appear in the Arti ceremony. We will consider the value of rituals and think about any rituals that we have experienced.

Computing

In our topic 'Bletchley Park', we will be looking into the first computers and the importance of Bletchley Park to the World War 2 effort. We will also research historical figures in computing and identify how these figures were influential in creating modern computers.

Music

Throughout the unit 'Songs of World War 2', we will be developing greater accuracy in pitch and control. We will identify pitches within an octave when singing and using knowledge of pitch to develop confidence when singing in parts.

Science

We will be continuing with our 'Controlling Electrical Circuits' unit this half term. We will be looking at how electrical circuits can be controlled by looking at electrical current and electrical resistance. We will explore this through investigating how the number of lamps in a circuit affect how long a battery lasts, how the length of a wire affects how bright a bulb is and whether the type of wire used in a circuit affects the resistance.

PE

Our indoor PE learning this half term is cheerleading and our outdoor PE learning will use Real PE.
